living somewhere in between

naked wood and evergreen

baby beech trees want to cling

to dead leaves into spring

never sure if to let go

or even if or when to sow

Jack pines are like this too

(In New Hampshire there are few)

encircling their baby seeds

not like their fellow trees

thick barkskin waits and waits

and only raging fire satiates
