Mount Ellen (4,083) and Mount Abraham (4,017), Backpacking the Long Trail

OCTOBER GEESE

We never see those long, flat necks
but through the trees, now and then
hear a round of low, throaty calls
leaving home with melancholy hearts
as the first coating of winter's crystal
climbs and cracks up our shelter window

Hike level: Moderate
Location: Warren, VT
Driving distance from Boston: About 3.25 hours
Cost: FREE to hike and FREE to camp overnight at Stark's Nest warming hut.
Description: My friend and I did a one-night backpack on the Long Trail, section hiking from where she left of a couple of years ago. Our route was App Gap to Lincoln Gap.
