The Arnold Arboretum

THE GOLDEN HOUR

An hour before the sun has set, we decide,
last-minute, to take a walk in the woods.
After talking enough to process the day
she stops among the conifers,
turning towards the fading light
to sing me her prayer.
She closes her eyes to find the notes
one hand moving in space, up and up
while the other one taps her hip.
Here, again, our friendship stands still
as it rushes by and even though
I’ve known her for twenty years,
I’ve never known her like this.
