Crocker Mountain (4,228'), South Crocker Mountain (4,050'), and Mount Redington (4,010')

MOUNTAIN LAUREL

For hundreds of thousands of years
you’ve perched on this mountain side
with your pink, cup-shaped, petals
fused together like joined palms
offering up a metaphorical heart.

Mount Redington is one of two New England 4,000 Footers without maintained trails to the summits. Since so many people have hiked it, there is a well-trodden herd path, but there are lots of blowdowns and it's easy to get turned around. Luckily, someone tied pink and orange surveyor's tape to trees along the way!

Hike level: Moderate
Location: Carrabessett Valley, ME
Driving distance from Boston: About 4.5 hours
Cost: FREE to hike; You can camp at Crocker Cirque Campsite about 1 mile into the hike. It's free and first-come-first-serve.
Description: Crocker Mountain, South Crocker Mountain and Mount Redington can be hiked together in one day. All three summits are wooded, but there are some excellent views along the way, as well as a view point off South Crocker (Although it was cloudy and rainy the day we hiked, so we just saw lots of white). We did an out and back (hiking in to camp at Cirque Campsite the night before). Initially, I was hesitant to try doing Redington on the same day, but was glad we did. The path was noticeable enough, but we definitely questioned ourselves several times and checked the compass and route descriptions. Total mileage with the road walk is about 8.9 with 3,717 ft elevation gain.
