HOW MEMORIES ARE MADE

Picture yourself buying a do-it-yourself kit.
The instructions list all items inside, except—
you count twelve screws, not fifteen
and when you open the watercolor box
you see white indents where the paint should be
to top it off, there is only one wing for your plane.

It doesn’t make sense.
You sprawl your hands flat on the floor, searching—
Multiply the senses and maybe
you will find the smallest of something
but, alas, it was a manufacturer’s glitch
you’re stuck with missing parts.

This gets you really mad.
Wanting to find someone to tell,
you find your brother in the den
watching TV and eating a frozen mini
pizza without a plate or napkin or fork.

“Look,” you say,
“I only got parts of this stupid piece of crap thing.”
He shakes his head, but doesn’t look.
“That sounds unlikely,” he says, then,
“that’s assbackwards.”

Of course, it’s the truth.
You return to the kit and, alone,
build with missing parts, only—
it wobbles; its shapeless and now
that nice person smiling on the cover
of the box, looks like a sham.

You cannot build with missing parts.
So you find extra screws in the thingdrawer
(they never belonged to anything)
you mix old paints from what you have in the shed
you go to the wood yard in search of a missing wing.

You are gloating now,
because you’ve solved a problem.
You go back to your brother,
still with the TV in the den
“Check it out,” you say.
This time he looks.

“What the hell is that shit?”
You know he’s being a jerk
but the question is an important one.
“Well, butthead,” you stall,
holding up your creation in the afternoon light,
you smile and say, “It’s mine.”
