I don’t know about you
but my head is a noisy place to live;
relentlessly playing history back,
images familiar with their sticky sorrow.
It’s all I can do sometimes
to drop down to the earth
inhaling the sappy pine,
the sound of wind creaking a dead, hallow tree,
cotton-ball-stretched-thin clouds,
a sparrow darting, chasing the light between branches.
It’s a throwing up of the hands
a deep grief and a loss of words.
Approach yourself with a gentle heart
There is a person in there
You are working to befriend.
