Wildcat Canyon Regional Park

Behind your house
on the Dr. Suess hills,
we saw a snake;
long, muscular, splotched,
with a narrow neck and a big head,
five fingers thick at least;
interrupting our conversation
about the importance of
frequent water breaks,
fertility shots,
divorce proceedings;
he was doubling back on himself
like those kids toys
made of notched wood and string;
we thought it was a Prairie Rattle
(our reptilian brains)
I lept; I ran of course
but you, with your curious soul
and your animal heart, stayed
seeing through his mimicry;
a Pacific Gopher,
docile and harmless,
warming himself in the morning sun.
