Mount Crawford

a forest mouse

Seen by lucky surprise,
as he scurried,
back and forth,

busily building his home,
sea green moss and sticks
filled his mouth, making
mini pufferfish cheeks.

We peered, as humans do,
rubbernecking to
get the best view

not expecting him to be
brave and bothered, to
turn and lunge at us
(really like a fake out
with all that bravado)

making us squeal
and jump back
just as if we’d seen him
that morning
on the linoleum floor
