Joe’s dog Pretzel lopes, wide-legged
up the trail, his chest like a hammock
slung from branch to branch
every few steps he turns
watching us over his shoulder
a tongue loose and dangling to one side
he rests his weight against Joe’s leg
when we stop for water, then whines
like the creaking of trees in the wind
as they wait for a storm that never comes

Description: North Kinsman and South Kinsman Mountains are often combined for a day of hiking. There's a lookout just past the South Kinsman summit and North Kinsman has 360 views. There are many ways to hike these peaks. We did an out and back up Lonesome Lake to Fishin' Jimmy Trail to Kinsman Ridge Trail. The total mileage is 10.0 and it's about 3,500' elevation gain.
